Boys have joined our Prep community!

Leweston has always taken boys into the Pre-Prep and since September 2011 we have extended this provision by taking boys as day pupils into the first year of the Prep School (Year 3).  A fully co-educational system will be phased in over the following three years so that by September 2014 the Prep School will be taking boys into all Year groups.

Boys admitted...

Why?

The decision to embark on this exciting change was driven by demand from the parents of both boys and girls currently in the school.  We are delighted that we are now extending the exemplary educational experience we provide for boys, whilst ensuring that the unique ethos which underpins our school remains at the heart of what we do.

This development will also provide an opportunity for other families in the area who are looking for a co-educational Prep School with a Catholic foundation which welcomes pupils of all denominations.

What provision is being made for boys?

Leweston Prep offers the full educational provision expected for boys both in terms of curriculum and sport.  Rugby, football, cricket and hockey are now being taught.  The school already has an excellent sporting reputation and facilities which are set within the extensive grounds.  These include an all weather pitch, basketball, badminton and squash courts, an indoor sports hall, gymnasium and outdoor heated swimming pool.

Boys are encouraged to engage in the school’s extensive and varied extra-curricular activity programme which includes sailing, golf, kick boxing, orchestra, various sports clubs, DT, art, computing, environmental club and circus skills (amongst others).

The growth of the school will provide educational benefits to all our pupils and the investment required for additional boys’ facilities will be matched by investment in facilities for girls.

Our committed staff have, between them, many years of experience teaching within co-educational environments.  They are embracing this change which enables them to provide the highest quality education to both girls and boys.

Will there be boarding provision for boys?

There is currently no boarding provision for boys at Leweston Prep.  The school runs daily bus services from Bridport, Castle Cary and Dorchester for its day pupils.   New bus routes are currently being considered.

What options are available for boys at the end of Year 6?

Some independent Senior Schools and most local maintained schools take boys from the age of 11(into Year 7).  Traditional Prep Schools, which offer an education up to the age of 13 (end of Year 8), are also an option for parents.

Leweston Prep has a good relationship with a number of the local schools and we are committed to advising parents on the best option for their child at the end of Year 6.  We place great importance on ensuring a smooth transition for all our pupils to the next stage of their education.

What does this mean for the Senior School?

The Senior School, which takes girls from the age of 11 through to 18, will remain single sex.
