Leweston School welcomes applicants from overseas, in 2016 there were 14 different nationalities studying at Leweston.
International students come to Leweston both for the duration of their studies and for courses of one year. We welcome pupils into all year groups from Year 3 (age 7) to Year 12 (age 16) with the exception of Year 11 which is a public examination year and not suitable for entry. Students generally start in September, however exceptions can be made depending on availability of places.
For pupils coming with the aim of staying in the British higher education system (university) we recommend starting as soon as possible. However, if your child is coming to improve their English for a year, any year is equally suitable, although pre A Level (Sixth Form) gives a wider breath of subject choice.
For the benefit of all students, the school has a policy to maintain a good balance of British and international students in classes and boarding houses so availability changes throughout the academic year. Our Sixth Form places are usually full by Easter. It is therefore advisable to apply early in the academic year for the following September entry to stand the best chance of success, especially for Spanish speakers.
The School will also consider taking students for one term on request, this is typically in the Autumn or Summer.
Leweston does not normally require candidates to interview in school as this can be difficult for overseas families. If you cannot visit, we ask for your child’s most recent school report, a reference from their current Head and for completion of a supervised English and Maths test. We will then arrange for a Skype interview with a senior member of staff, usually the Head of EAL or Deputy Head Academic for those who have English as their first language.
Our Head usually visits Mexico, China and Hong Kong every year so face to face interviews and family visits may be possible at this time.
For entry into Sixth Form, international candidates would normally be expected to offer one of the following qualifications at pass level or above – GSCE English, IGCSE English as a second language, IELTS band 5.5 or any other equivalent EAL qualification. The standard entry requirement for all students entering Sixth Form is 6 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade 5 or above with grade 7 or above in the subjects they wish to pursue at A Level or Pre-U.
For candidates looking to enter lower down the school we are looking for evidence that they have the potential to achieve Grade C or above at English GCSE (or equivalent). This is assessed through an age appropriate school exam which would be invigilated by your child’s school or agent. EAL is provided at a suitable level for each pupil as part of the International Boarding Fee.
A decision to offer a place will be made by the Head and Deputy Head Academic after assessment. To accept the offer we ask you to pay a deposit and sign the parent contract which guarantees the place. A New Pupil Pack will then be sent to you ahead of your child’s start date.
If your child has a UK or European Union passport they will not require a visa to study in the UK. If your child does not have a UK or European passport they may require a Tier 4 visa. Parents of a child who lives overseas should check the UK Visas website for guidance. Parents must ensure that their child has a valid visa before they start at Leweston. Parents must also ensure that their child’s passport and visa are renewed as required. More information is available on the UK Visas website.
Pupils who do not live in the UK will need a guardian to act in loco parentis whilst they are at school. It may be necessary for pupils to stay with their guardians for some exeats and holidays if they are unable to return home. The school is not in a position to recommend agencies or individuals but a list of people offering this service is included in the New Pupil Pack.
