Florence and Rome History of Art Study Tour 2008

During the Easter holiday a group of 14 sixth form girls accompanied by Mrs Williams and Mr Hayward travelled to Florence and Rome to study the work of the great Renaissance and Baroque painters, sculptors and architects. After the success of last years tour to Venice with Winchester College we again joined forces and the combined knowledge and enthusiasm of the staff from the two schools made for a stimulating and deeply fascinating study of art history. Highlights included the Uffizi Gallery and the Accademia in Florence and in Rome we visited both St Peters and the Vatican Museum which climaxed in a viewing of the Sistine Chapel. We managed to fit a great deal into 8 days and on our journey from Florence to Rome we stopped in Siena and attended mass in the cathedral. In the evening we had our meals with Winchester and then time to socialise. We even managed to fit in some time for shopping. At times we were overwhelmed by the skill, beauty and presence of the works we saw but we will always remember the wonderful opportunity to study some of the greatest works of art in the world.
