Personalised Learning

Personalised Learning

At the cornerstone of Leweston’s educational approach is personalised learning and at every stage the school works hard to ensure the educational needs of every pupil are met.

Gifted and Talented

Leweston’s academic enrichment programme extends and expands on the core curriculum but for those pupils who are performing outstandingly well there are supplementary activities for them to access including regular TED Talks, Rhetoric sessions, Leweston Lectures, Symposia and various national and international Olympiads.

Able pupils looking to extend their academic programme have taken public examinations outside of the core curriculum with personalised tuition. There is individual teaching available for minority languages including Greek, Italian and German as well as Japanese and Mandarin clubs.

Potential Sixth Form students of medicine, veterinary science and Oxbridge candidates have a programme of preparation in place including visits, interview practice and mentoring. Guidance to potential students is given through the careers programme lower down the school.

Native languages and pupils with advanced proficiency

We are committed to helping pupils continue with a language in which they are already proficient, if we can. This might involve special conversation lessons, or small group or individual teaching on a paying basis. Native speakers may be entered for public examinations without tuition.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

Access to Leweston’s experienced, specialist EAL teachers is part of Leweston’s international boarding package. The department works with pupils on the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing from beginner to advanced levels.

More information about our EAL provision is available here.

Support for students with learning difficulties

Both the Prep and Senior Schools have specialist professionals on the staff to assist those pupils who need some extra support to achieve academically.

We can provide initial individual assessments and if necessary arrange assessments with an educational psychologist. Tailored lessons are timetabled weekly, and individual education plans are shared with all staff. Pupil progress is closely monitored and there is regular consultation with parents.
