Sport and Physical Education play an important part of everyday life at Leweston and there is an impressive range of sports for pupils of all abilities to take full advantage of.
The mainstream sports of Hockey, Netball and Tennis are well represented with opportunities at all levels and pupils are regularly selected for District, County and Regional development centres. A comprehensive and extensive fixture programme is in place to ensure all pupils have the opportunity to represent the school in competitive matches at their own level. These fixtures take place both during the week as well as on Saturdays. There is also a strong tradition of Inter-House competitions where all pupils participate in a full range of sporting events.
Leweston pupils dominate the Cross-Country circuit at County and Regional level. Crowned as National Champions in 2009, Leweston most recently qualified for the ESAA National School’s Cup Final held in Liverpool in 2016. The school regularly hosts the Regional Championships and its teams are seen at the top of the podium at numerous competitions. The school enjoys an enviable reputation on the cross country circuit. There is a tailor made programme for all runners at whatever level they perform, led by dedicated and internationally experienced coaches.
The fine tradition of distance running at the school also translates to the athletics track, where Leweston pupils thrive. 2017 was a stunning season, with both the Prep and Senior teams qualifying for the ESAA Cup Regional Finals. Many of our athletes compete at the National IAPS Athletics Finals. In 2017 we saw one of our pupils become the National 1500m Champion and others won numerous medals at the prestigious Senior Wessex Finals, breaking several Championship Records in the process.
Similarly, the swimming programme is the envy of many with pupils being put through their paces in the early morning sessions. There are coached swim sessions every day catering for beginners and elite performers alike. The latter, rather like the runners, have individual programmes to fit around their busy academic, music or drama commitments.
It is perhaps, in the combination of swimming and running, that the school is gaining unrivalled success with the Biathle and Biathlon competitions, often seen as the precursor to other multi-events that build up to the full Modern Pentathlon. For more information see the Pentathlon section of the school website.
Leweston enjoys excellent sports facilities, aided by the 42 acres of grounds in which the school sits. There is an all-weather hockey pitch which also provides a further nine tennis courts in the summer term, a sports hall which acts as both an indoor netball and hockey court, provides four badminton courts and two squash courts as well as a small fitness and weights room. Other facilities include six netball courts, six hard surface tennis courts; an indoor heated swimming pool, 300m grass track and synthetic long jump.
The school boasts a dynamic sports department with inspirational and specialist members of staff for all disciplines. These staff members bring their own personal expertise and enthusiasm to everything they do, including the dedicated training and mentoring programmes that are tailored to an individual’s needs and abilities. Indeed, all pupils are encouraged to pursue any sport that interests them. Support is then offered to ensure that they can develop and achieve the very best of their ability and compete at the level of competition that they aspire to.
