Sport is an important part of school life at Leweston Prep for all pupils from Nursery to Year 6. The extensive grounds, the sports hall and the indoor swimming pool provide excellent learning facilities and all pupils are encouraged to join in and enjoy taking part in a wide variety of sports.
PE and Games are taught as separate lessons from Reception to Year 6 and all pupils from Nursery to Year 6 also have a weekly swimming lesson throughout the academic year.
In PE lessons pupils learn about the importance of being active and healthy through sports such as cross country running, gymnastics, trampolining and athletics.
In Games lessons pupils learn about the concepts of attack and defence as well as the values of teamwork and communication. From Year 2 onwards pupils are given the opportunity to take part in competitive fixtures and therefore develop a sense of tactical awareness. The sports covered in Games lessons include hockey, football, netball, rugby, tennis and cricket.
Pupils also have the opportunity to pursue a range of sports, some of which are covered in the curriculum and some of which aren’t, through the extensive extra-curricular activities programme. Some of the options available include pistol shooting, fencing, running, swimming, ballet and tennis coaching.
