English
English at Key Stage One focuses on the main skills of speaking and listening, reading and writing.
The pupils will learn how to take part as speakers and listeners in a group, ask and respond to questions and participate in role-play and drama. A variety of texts both fiction, non fiction and poetry will be introduced to increase children's confidence and awareness when reading and teachers will encourage the pupils to predict and comment about the text as well as make and justify their personal preferences when reading.
With writing the children will become able to retell stories and have some experience of imaginative writing as well as recording personal experiences. They will begin sequencing and planning their written work as appropriate and develop spelling strategies through formal phonics and spelling tests.
As the children move up through the school they will participate in class and groups discussions as well as assemblies.
