Santa drops in for Operation Christmas Child

On Thursday 20 November Leweston Prep school enjoyed a flying visit from Father Christmas who forfeited his usual means of transport for a Royal Navy Lynx helicopter!  Santa made this special appearance to collect the show boxes the prep school had been collecting for Operation Christmas Child and annual project that enables schools and other organisations to fill ordinary shoe boxes with small toys, school supplies, sweets, and other gifts for needy children around the world.  Operation Christmas Child is the world's largest children's Christmas project. Since 1990 the project has brought the joy of Christmas to more than 60 million boys and girls throughout the world.

On Wednesday Years 3 and 4 not only had the opportunity to hand over their Christmas parcels to Father Christmas, but they also had a chance to check out the helicopter that he arrived in and try on some of the equipment. Quite a few children clambered into the cockpit and found out just how many controls are needed to fly a helicopter. Others put on one of the helmets and tested out the attached sun visor. The children were also surprised at the heaviness of the survival vest. The pilot showed Mrs Kiddle and a group of children some of the contents. The equipment included a small canister of oxygen and flares. They even found out that the helicopter seat can turn into a miniature raft should the helicopter land in the sea!
