English Pre-U

The basic process of English Literature in the Sixth Form consists of reading, reflection, analysis and discussion.  Pupils build on the skills, knowledge and understanding acquired at GCSE.

The Pre-U course offers a programme of study that will be rewarding and enjoyable in its own right and which forms a basis for further study at degree level.

The Pre U Literature in English course aims to develop four key areas of understanding:
o Competence in writing and reading and expressing yourself effectively and appropriately;
o Criticism: being able to apply ideas and to read analytically, with insight;
o Connection: to be able to draw effective comparisons within and between texts;
o Context: to understand how the background to a text and the experience of its author and the situation of the reader are part of the experience of literature.

The Pre-U course has four equally weighted components, all of which are assessed at the end of the course.  These are Prose and Poetry, Drama, Comment and Analysis and Personal Investigation.  The course aims to give pupils a broad understanding of the history and tradition of Literature in English, combined with a detailed knowledge and understanding of key works of literature and also highly developed critical skills.

Above all the study of literature should be an enjoyable and inspiring experience.  Important skills are gained and developed through exposure to some of the most beautiful, striking and thought-provoking writing, which will fire enthusiasm and broaden awareness.
