Poetry in motion

The morning of October 31st and fourteen nervous finalists awaited their turn perform the poem which they learned to ‘perfection' before an audience of their peers and teachers. No one need have worried because every competitor gave an inspiring performance. The perfect silence in the school theatre is a testament to how impressive they were!

Three Year 13 students of English Literature accepted the difficult task of judging. It was the more difficult because of the wide range of poems performed: from Shakespeare and Blake to Agard and Hegley. However a final decision was made.
Joint First: Sophie Danby (Fisher) and Sophie Hawkins (Campion)
Second: Francesca Baker (Mayne)
Third: Hannah O'Toole-Thrower (Moore)

Congratulations to all pupils in Years 7-10, every one of whom competed in the initial rounds of the competition. It was a wonderfully enjoyable experience for the English Department to hear so many of our favourite poems performed with such sensitivity and courage, although the task of selecting the finalists was incredibly difficult. We are all looking forward to next year!
