Years 7 - 9
All girls in Year 7 study Latin, following the Cambridge Latin Course. There are two classes, one for beginners and the other for those who have done the language before. By Christmas the beginners are brought up to the level of the other group and, after a test taken by the whole year, the girls are distributed between the two sets. This means that an able girl who has not done Latin before is not disadvantaged and can work in the top set if she wins a place there.
In Year 8 Classical Studies is offered to those girls who are having difficulties with language work. Over two years the civilisations of Ancient Greece and Rome are studied. The other girls continue with a study of the language which also includes work on the daily life of the Romans in various points of the Empire.
Any girl entering the school in the course of Year 8 or 9 who has done no Latin may be assigned to the Classical Studies group unless she and her parents express a wish for her to take up Latin. At the beginning of Year 9 a beginners Latin class is timetabled alongside the usual Latin and Classical Studies classes.
