Physical Education GCSE

This is a two-year GCSE course that encompasses a mixture of both practical and theory.

The theoretical areas involve looking at the body - the skeleton, muscles, circulatory system and the heart.  An awareness of the body in movement is needed.  Elements of training and fitness are covered.  The major factors affecting a person's participation and performance are assessed before, finally, looking at the cultural and social factors that influence performance. Practically, students have to show ability in four sports from a variety of areas - team games, individual sports, riding, etc. Your performance is evaluated and you are shown how to analyse and improve your play.  Additionally, students have to devise and undertake a personal exercise programme so they become aware about structuring and following through a series of graded circuits. 40% of the marks are awarded for the examination taken at the end of the course.  60% is awarded for a mixture of practical performance, the personal exercise programme and for analysis and evaluation of performance

If you wish to follow the course it is important that you are interested in sport - you need to enjoy playing or taking part in games and activities.  It helps if you are a team player, but this is not necessary. Biology is very useful as a good part of the course involves human biology, and it helps if you have a sense of humour.
