Biology
The twenty first century is an exciting one for those studying Biology. Rapid developments in genetics, reproduction, biochemistry and microbiology mean the subject is constantly updating, and this new information is finding its way into the classroom very quickly. Some of these developments, such as genetic modification and assisted conception also have an ethical dimension; just because we can do certain things does it also follow that we have to do them? Biologists are also in the fore front of the debate on climate change and how it will affect us all. Biology is constantly in the news and learning about this subject has never been so important.
In all years Biology is taught as a separate subject by specialist teachers and Leweston is very fortunate in its beautiful grounds, which provide ideal opportunities for fieldwork in the summer term. There is a small pond which is used by several year groups, looking at classification, adaptations and diversity of organisms. There is a range of terrestrial habitats, such as grassland and woodland that can be surveyed.
