Physics A Level
It is recommended that girls taking A Level Physics have gained a good grade at GCSE in both Physics and Mathematics and the study of Mathematics at A Level is essential if girls intend to follow a career in Physics or Engineering, but if not studied only at this level, some help will be needed to cope with the mathematical demands of the A Level course. This is usually provided during the Lower Sixth year.
The course followed at Leweston is a modular one and gives a balanced and coherent study of Physics. AS Level involves:
Unit 1: Particles, Quantum Phenomena and Electricity
Unit 2: Mechanics, Materials and Waves.
Unit 3: Investigative and Practical skills in AS physics
A2 consists of:
Unit 4: Fields and Further Mechanics.
Unit 5: Nuclear Physics, Thermal Physics and an Optional Topic. Optional topics include Astrophysics, Medical Physics, Applied Physics and Turning Points in Physics.
Unit 6: Investigative and Practical skills in A2 Physics.
Examinations will be set in January and June of each year. Practical work forms an important part of any science course and students will be given plenty of opportunities to develop their practical skills. Practical assessment is done as a final examination for AS and for A2.
