Thinking Science
Thinking Science is an exciting new development which improves the cognitive skills for children in early years in secondary school. Thinking Science is based on the materials developed by the Cognitive Acceleration through Science Education (CASE) project. There are 30 lessons spread over all three sciences in Years 7 and 8. The one hour intervention lessons are used once a fortnight when teachers deliberately attempt to cause ‘cognitive conflict’ so that the children work in the ‘discomfort zone’ thus the lessons are hard work for the girls – even though they write very little. Each lesson has a specific focus for promoting logical thinking. The children think of them as ‘brain training’ sessions and they enjoy the challenges that they are set.
