Health & Social Care

Health and Social Care is a relatively new A Level at Leweston. It is one of the vocational A Levels and it looks at many aspects of the caring professions, from the perspective of both the carer and the client. It is a useful course for students planning to work in a caring profession, but it also teaches many valuable skills that could be of use in many careers, such as empathy, teamwork, discussion skills and independent learning. As a part of our teaching we undertake visits, to nursing homes and nursery schools, to give a flavour of the work involved in the caring professions.

Health and Social Care has the benefit of being largely assessed by teachers. This means that in year 12 there is only one externally examined unit. The other two units are both internally assessed by portfolio. In year 13 there is definitely one examined unit and one internally assessed unit.

In year 12 there are three units:
1/ Effective Caring (Examined)
2/ Effective Communication (Portfolio)
3/ Health and Disease (Portfolio)

In year 13 there are three units:
4/ Working in Health and Social Care (Portfolio) Compulsory unit
5/ Clients with Disabilities (Examined)
6/ Environmental Health (Portfolio)
These last two units are options and there may be the opportunity to offer different options instead of these two.
