Preparing for Life after Leweston
Virtually all activity and provision in the Sixth Form is aimed at preparation for life after Leweston. Focusing on their continuing education, students are given advice and guidance on higher education and post school opportunities through a structured programme over two years. Much of this is offered through PSHE lessons and tutorial time involving the tutors, the Head of Careers, outside speakers and the Head of Sixth Form. A wide range of resources are available including websites and paper based resources located in the Careers Department Library. While most Sixth Formers do go on to university from Leweston, the school takes care to help students consider the vast range of other possibilities.
Students are encouraged to consider the options open to them early in the Lower Sixth and to research courses and Higher Education Institutions together with their tutor and Head of Sixth Form. A visit to a UCAS Higher Education Convention in the spring term enables students to access information from a wide range of participating universities and colleges. Workshops in the summer term of the Lower Sixth help students to begin work on drafting their personal statements and completing the online application to university. Students are encouraged to visit universities they are seriously considering.
In the Upper Sixth continued individual support is available from Tutors and the Head of Sixth Form to assist students in finalising their applications following up with acceptance and sometimes rejection and helping students simply change their minds. The PSHE programme offers information and discussion on practical aspects of living away from home such as managing finance, personal safety and cooking on a limited budget.
All girls are offered individual interviews with the Careers Coordinator, the Head of Sixth Form and may arrange to have mock interview practice. A programme of lunchtime talks and discussion is open to all who wish to extend their horizons and skills but particularly those who are preparing Oxford or Cambridge applications or applying for medicine, dentistry or veterinary science. Those applying for Art Foundation courses are given advice and support by the Art Department staff on completing their application and preparing for interview and presenting a portfolio of work. In many other aspects too, travel abroad, organising events, social life, fund raising and the independence of driving, Sixth Formers' activities contribute to the happy transition from their school days to the adult world beyond.
