Community Life
Each year a team of Prefects and House Captains, led by the Head Girl, her Deputy and the House Captains, are elected to assist in various organisational tasks, to contribute to aspects of school and community life and to act as ambassadors for the school. Taking on these extra responsibilities is an opportunity to develop leadership for those Sixth Formers who demonstrate the appropriate qualities and who wish to play a part in particular areas of school life. There is enormous potential too for Sixth Formers to pursue their own interests so the character and activity in each year group varies. This individualism is actively supported by tutors and staff with the aim of also encouraging independence.
Prefects and captains are elected by members of Years 11, 12 and 13 and the staff and each prefect and captain has a line manager (such as a Head of Year) and a job description, another aspect of a student's preparation for life outside school. Prefects wear a green academic gown on formal occasions which they receive during Speech Day.
The community in which Sixth Formers live and work extends from friendship through to tutor groups, year groups, day and boarding students (Sixth Formers increasingly choose to "board" for at least some of the time), younger girls for whom they have varying responsibilities and beyond into Longburton and Sherborne. The voluntary work that Sixth Formers and OAs undertake pays tribute to the outward looking attributes nurtured at school. The school elects two "community prefects" which is indicative of the importance given to community life at Leweston.
