Life in Sixth Form

Life in the Leweston Sixth Form is quite different to that of the lower school. One obvious change is that members of the Sixth Form are not required to wear uniform but instead comply with a dress code. Students will find themselves treated differently by the staff and other pupils, as young adults with more freedom in the choices they make and how they manage their work. Sixth Formers have private study periods in which they can organise themselves under guidance. They are encouraged to work more independently supported by facilities such as dedicated art studios, design and technology workshops and ICT. There are five new subjects on offer at AS and A Level, all of which prove popular choices with the Lower Sixth.  As they progress into the Sixth Form the senior girls will notice how much flexibility there is in their choice of courses.  The curriculum is virtually bespoke for a Sixth Form student and incorporates content and study habits not utilised in the lower school.  Sports, with the introduction of different activities and qualifications take on a new role.

Relaxation and social life are also an important part of the Leweston Sixth Form and Sixth Formers are encouraged to take part in the activities on offer as well as given the opportunity and support to run their own for example the year usually begins with a ball run by the Upper Sixth. Sixth Formers leave school on weekday evenings in the minibus which takes them into town and they often travel further afield at weekends.   Frequently they attend events at other schools as well as hosting events at Leweston. The two common rooms, one with a fully-fitted kitchen, allow the Sixth Formers to entertain at weekends and arrange dinner parties if they can face the clearing up afterwards.  Festivals and birthdays (significant of course....) are celebrated with enthusiasm.  Tutor groups of 12 are normal in the Sixth Form and tutors know their Sixth Form tutees well.  The relationship between Sixth Formers and Tutors is both pastoral and academic and Tutors write university references.  Symbolic maybe of Sixth Formers' progress into the world beyond school is their driving to school and many students at Leweston rejoice in this privilege.
