Year 8

Our Year 8 students enjoyed an informative and educational day at Longleat organised by the British Army last week. During the course of the day they attended a number of workshops where they had to work in teams alongside other schools to solve the various challenges. The workshops included;

STEM:  An engaging and interactive stand delivered by the Army Youth Outreach Team challenging students to think through difficult problems and challenges using STEM based command task equipment. In this task their scenario was a disaster relief zone and they had to build telecommunication towers to re-establish contact between two cut-off communities.

Critical Thinking: A problem based activity using Longleat Safari Park, where students had to come up with a plan to solve a time critical mission.

First Aid:  An interactive and hands on stand delivered by the Army Medical Services where students learnt lifesaving skills and practiced first aid.

History / THANK YOU: A fun and interactive workshop delivered by the Royal British Legion (RBL), educating students about the THANK YOU movement and the RBL. In this task the students were tasked to devise ‘freeze frames’ to depict stories of individuals and groups from World Wars.

We were very lucky with the weather with much fun had in the sunshine in a brilliant location. Leweston would like to give a very big thank you to the Military for organising this event.

Year 7 and 9

Our Year 7 and Year 9 students also enjoyed workshops delivered by the Army focused on the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) in our daily lives and to highlight the diverse and exciting careers available involving these subjects.  As part of the workshop entitled ‘Operation Disaster Relief’ the students were encouraged to think about real life scenarios in which the Army become involved, providing aid in disaster zones. They were then tasked with building Lego Mindstorm robots which they then programmed to carry out a number of ‘tasks’ – reconnaissance, delivery of humanitarian aid and repairing of infrastructure.
