On 30 June 2020, Leweston made history hosting its very first Virtual Sports Day.
Taking a twist on the traditional event here at Leweston, pupils completed activities at home throughout the day and submitted their scores at the end. In the morning, the event started with a fantastic Opening Ceremony which featured messages from each Head of House, the Sport Prefect and a very special message of encouragement from the World Number 1 Female Rower and Olympic Champion, Helen Glover!
Pupils then went on to complete the activities, stopping for a lunch time quiz at midday. The jam-packed event was brought to a close with the Closing Ceremony and a special message from Bath Rugby’s Max Clark. Activities included Bottle Flip, 5k or 10k run and cycle, Backboard Bank It and a scavenger hunt (see the video below to watch all of the activities!)
A big thank you to the Sports Department and especially to Mr Cannon, Teacher of Physical Education and Boarding Housemaster, who worked hard to put together the memorable event. Although we were sad not to all be together, the day’s schedule was full to the brim with fun physical activities which accumulated points for the students’ Houses and was enjoyed by all who participated!
Students described the event as ‘unique‘, ‘fun‘, ‘creative‘ and ‘exciting‘.
After a lot of hard work preparing to create something special for the children, it was truly worth it in the end. Although not our usual sports day, it was certainly one to remember that has created history. I am sure that years to come we will be talking about The Virtual Sports Day. I was overwhelmed with the engagement of families, participation from students and support of staff. The Virtual Sports Day was about Fun, Participation and Fair Play, and that’s exactly what we got!
