Equestrian sport has been one of the earliest competitive activities to resume to some normality after COVID-19 lockdown due to the ability to social distance once onboard a horse, strict protocols and guidelines in place limiting numbers attending, and a mantra to ‘arrive, compete and go’. With these new systems in place riding competitions have restarted with great enthusiasm.

NSEA Dorset County SJ Championships, Moreton EC

After five weeks of regular training with Emma Fisher, Leweston’s equestrian squad entered the, previously postponed, NSEA Dorset County SJ Championships at Moreton EC and finished with some fantastic results;

– Team NAVY took the County Championship title at Novice level (80-85cm) with team members Madeline RS, Maisy M, Molly C and Charlie W.
– Team STEEL won the Open Class (1m-1.05m) Team County Championship and qualified for the NSEA Hickstead Elite Championships with team members Sacha GD, Matilda J, Issy C and Loveday F who just beat Leweston Team AQUA into second place.

Quite fittingly, Leweston Equestrian Captain Sacha GD and Deputy Captain Matilda J each won Individual County Championship titles in the 1m Open and 1.10m elite respectively.

The school was especially proud to have 5 horses jumping in the 1.10m class, it made for a very exciting competition with everyone jumping for individual honours and trying to secure not only the Individual County Championship title at that level but the last ‘Hickstead Elite’ qualifying place.

“Congratulations to the squad who competed. We saw some really great jumping rounds with 12 individual placings and every team coming home with rosettes.”
– Lorraine Roberts, Leweston Equestrian Manager

Moreton-Russell NSEA ODE

Last weekend seven Leweston riders took part in the NSEA Moreton-Russell Eventing series at Moreton EC. With a great dressage score and a double clear (show jumping and around the cross-country) Molly C and her pony, Courtenay Autumn, won the NSEA Section C1 (80-85cm), whilst Maisy M carried out two rides in this section and again had two super double clears resulting in good dressage scores, placing 6th and 8th.

The week previously, Madeline RS had been surprised to find herself placed second in her very first BE90 and again finished in the placings at Moreton in the hotly contested NSEA section F1 finishing in seventh. Flora M, riding Belclare Warrior, had a brilliant dressage score of 21.3 and secured a very well deserved second place in Open Section E ODE90. Loveday F performed fantastically and came in second place in the ODE100 NSEA section.

It was lovely to see OA’s Maria S and Kitty GD, Leweston’s past Equestrian Captains, out competing at Moreton. Proving again that our equestrian squad really is one big supportive family!

At the end of the month, Leweston equestrian squad will head off to Hickstead, Sussex for the NSEA Eventers Challenge Championships, Hickstead Elite 1m and 1.10m Championships and the Royal Windsor Final which were all previously postponed. Good luck to the 15 riders and 19 horses, and our 14 individuals and 10 teams who, over the three days, will all be competing for national titles!
