On Wednesday 7 October, fourteen Year 8 and 9 pupils took part in the termly event, Oxplore Live, an academic outreach event hosted by the University of Oxford. Pupils had the opportunity to listen to a range of experts on the subject ‘Could there be real-life X-men?’, considering the science and ethics behind genetic modification, human enhancement and robotics.
During the event, which was held over Teams, pupils could answer questions via the chat function, take part in a quiz and submit questions to the panel. Caitlin W, Year 8, had her thought-provoking question read out on the live stream and answered by the panel. Caitlin asked whether they thought the concept of what counts as a “super-power” has changed over time, as modifications that were once useful in the past could now be less desired.
Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to consider the “Big Question”, engaging enthusiastically with the subject matter and look forward to the next event in the Spring Term.
