The lead up to Christmas is always a busy one and this year is no different. Leweston students and staff have been busy taking part in festive activities, acts of kindness, spreading Christmas cheer throughout the community, and performing beautiful Christmas carols. Below are just a handful of examples of some of the activities from the end of the Autumn Term.

Sixth Form Boxes

As part of our ongoing partnership with the Sherborne Food Bank, Sixth Form students were busy gift-wrapping this mountain of empty boxes during the last week of term!

Sherborne Food Bank will fill the boxes with Christmas dinners and deliver them on Christmas Eve to the families and individuals it supports. A massive well done to all students who took part, led by the Charity and Community Service prefects, Finn and Saffron.

Year 7 Christmas Crib Competition

As part of the School’s tradition, Year 7 took part in the annual Christmas Crib competition. The tradition of the Christmas crib dates back to the 13th century and was instituted by St Francis of Assisi. The students were tasked with creating a nativity scene within the confines of a shoe box, using household materials. Their creation needed to reflect the Christian belief of the incarnation, that Jesus is God ‘in flesh’. Congratulations to Year 7 who all produced fantastic pieces of work, particular congratulations to the four category winners:

Lottie C – Best use of materials
Felix B – Honourable mention
Anna K – Most artistic
Jessica S – Most original scene

Lord’s Larder Donations

Students throughout the Senior school participated in a Reverse Advent Calendar project, to benefit The Lord’s Larder Food Bank in Yeovil.  Mrs Littlechild had lots of help from her Year 9 elves, loading the ‘sleigh’ up with boxes of non-perishable food and Christmas treats to help those in need in our greater community.

Christmas Hamper to the Sisters

As part of their Community Service programme, Year 12 students created a beautiful Christmas hamper for our beloved Sisters at St Antony’s Convent in Sherborne.  Sisters Josephine, Brede, and Pauline all worked at St Anthony’s school and taught many of our students’ mothers and grandmothers!  Sister Carmel has moved to Sherborne more recently and is a tremendous support to our Chaplaincy Coordinator, Mrs Twist.  For more information on the history of the founding of our school by the Religious of Christian Instruction, please click here.

Christmas Card Competition

Each year students enter the Catholic School Christmas Card Competition. Students produced beautiful artworks to enter. Congratulations to Bea B (Year 7) whose artwork was Highly Commended! This is the second year running that Leweston has placed or been highly commended in the UK wide competition.

Further congratulations to all of the students who entered our in-house competition and to Wiktoria S, Year 12, the overall winner.

Carol Service

Due to COVID restrictions, the annual tradition of coming together as a school community for the end of term Carol Service could not go ahead as usual. However, with a big thank you to Dr Milestone, Director of Music, and her Department we could enjoy our students’ beautiful performances, which had been pre-recorded in ‘bubbles’, virtually via Zoom. We are delighted to share these with you, below.

Dr Milestone also wrote an article for the School Blog ‘Carols Against COVID’, and explores the impact of COVID on her department and how Christmas music-making could continue in the face of adversity.
