Leweston School had great success at the National Schools Shooting Finals at Cannock Chase Leisure centre, with 12 shooters from the school taking part making up 1 Junior team, 1 Intermediate team and 2 Senior teams. The team travelled up the day before for a practice session using the new British shooting target and scoring system. The shooting competition starts with a prelim and team round, the shooters have a 5 minute shooting warm up, followed by 20 shots in 20 minutes to achieve a total score, the top 8 shooters go forward to the finals, the team score of 3 team members scores added together to decide team positions.
The day started at 09:00am with the Junior team who got of to a great start, Henrietta J, Year 8, finished 5th in the prelim round and qualified for the final where she finished 7th. The team of Henrietta, Evanna B, Year 8, & Lucy G, Year 7, finished 3rd to take bronze medal with the 4th placed team, The Elms School, just 4 points behind, and only 12 points behind silver team, Lockerbie Academy, and 19 points behind gold medal winners, Taunton Prep in a very close team competition!
The next competition was the Intermediate event that started at 12:00pm, Honor G, Year 10, had a great prelim round shooting 172 and qualifying for the final where she finished 5th, and with the team of Honor G, Year 10, Reuben C, Year 9, and Nikita M, Year 10, took team gold to be crowned National Champions winning with a clear margin of 34 points from Ellesmere College, and Ipswich High School.
The last event of the day was the senior competition at 16:20pm with Leweston having two teams taking part, the A team of Emily A, Year 11, Flora S-B, Year 11, and Reece W, Year 11, finished 4th and B team of Genesia B, Year 11, Gigi K, Year 11, and Miller B, Year 11, finished 5th.
This was a great experience for all the team who were a great credit to the school during the whole day putting in some good shooting scores.
