In Art, Year 9 students have been inspired by artists Wayne Thiebaud and Joel Penkman, creating a whole selection of tasty treats! Work has been made in both 2 and 3 Dimensions, exploring drawing, painting, and ceramics.

Wayne Thiebaud:

Looking at the late American Artist ‘Wayne Thiebaud’, students explored a range of materials and approaches to recreating observational interpretations of cakes in painterly illustrative styles. Theibaud’s sumptuously decorated cakes with their thickly applied paint mimicking the delicious frosting, gave students inspiration to create both vibrant paintings and glazed ceramic works.

Their amazing paintings were created using the three primary colours, plus white and black, to develop understanding of colour mixing and to implement students’ knowledge of colour theory.

Joel Penkman:

Students refined their observational drawing techniques inspired by New Zealand born artist and illustrator ‘Joel Penkman’. Penkman’s obsession with food links well with our sweet treat theme and enabled students to demonstrate a more precise and refined work. Replicating her realist style, students worked hard to achieve highly rendered pencil drawings from observational still life, with exacting detail.

Fun, larger than life glazed biscuit ceramics were also created using layers of rolled out clay, which were embossed, embellished, and layered with a glossy glaze.
