Art and Design
The Art and Design Department at Leweston is a lively and original place which offers the pupils an opportunity to explore a range of creative areas.
The Art and Design Centre houses two Fine Art studios, two Sixth Form studios, a pottery workshop, creative computer suite, dark room, sewing room and design and textiles studio giving the pupils the specialist resources they need for their talents to develop. Pottery, fine art, design and textiles are part of the curriculum for Years 7, 8 and 9 and give each pupil two hours a week in creative classes.
The Department has specialist teachers in sculpture, ceramics, painting, printmaking, fashion, graphics and photography. This enables pupils to explore a wide range of media and develop their own personal specialisms. The creative curriculum is broad and develops creative artists that go on to university courses ranging from Animation and Fine Art to Shoe Design.
As well as lessons, the Centre provides creative clubs for all. There is also the opportunity for students to undertake creative commissions ranging from in-house Christmas cards to bespoke banners for the town. Scholars are called upon for specialist workshops and commissions.
In the Sixth Form life drawing classes are delivered once a week with Sherborne School to supplement pupils’ portfolios and during exam seasons the Department offers pupils studio times during evening and weekends.
The Department provides numerous opportunities for pupils’ work to be seen by the wider community. We run two major annual events: a Fashion Show in the autumn and a summer Art Exhibition where GCSE and A Level work is showcased. Pupils are also offered opportunities to create work for school display and stage productions. Previously students have shown their talents creating costumes, makeup and hair designs for the Lion King and The Ash Girl.
Trips to London, Paris, Barcelona, Rome, and a tour of the USA, are regularly offered by the Department to provide students with inspiration and a creative experience in the world’s best museums and galleries.
