Leweston delivers a broad and flexible curriculum that ensures balanced, appropriate and interesting learning opportunities for every pupil focused on enabling pupils to achieve the best possible academic success.
There is a strong emphasis on working hard, striving for excellence and independent learning however we believe that happy pupils are motivated pupils and students are encouraged to participate in sport, music and creative arts because learning takes place as much outside the classroom as within it.
Years 7, 8 and 9
From Year 7 to Year 9 all pupils follow a wide-ranging curriculum studying English, Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, History, Geography, Religious Studies, ICT, French, Spanish, Art and Design, Latin, Music, Home Economics, Music, Performing Arts, PE and PSHE. While traditional in the rigour and range of subjects and teaching, the curriculum is considered, developed and changed to suit the academic needs of pupils an annual basis.
Pupils are set for Maths from Year 7. In Year 9 pupils are streamed according to broad ability for all subjects. From September 2019 the School will be adopting a diamond model for Maths and Science teaching, at this point boys and girls will be taught separately in those subjects.
There is now GCSE preparatory work for many subjects in Year 9. An outline of the curriculum for Years 7, 8 and 9 can be viewed below:
Years 10 and 11
The school prides itself on offering a bespoke approach to GCSE choices where pupils are invited to select the courses that they want to study and the timetable is then constructed around them.
We work hard to offer a varied choice of subjects and supporting activities at GCSE and, whatever a pupil’s strengths, there will be a suitable combination of subjects. Our individual approach to teaching and learning ensures every pupil is supported and encouraged in their chosen programme. The curriculum and teaching is designed to lay the foundations for the A Level, Pre-U or BTEC choices available at Sixth Form.
All pupils take GCSEs in the core subjects of English Literature, English Language, Mathematics, Science (either combined science (2 GCSEs) or three separate GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics) and Religious Studies. Pupils choose a language from French, Spanish or their native language plus EAL. They are then free to choose up to three option subjects, which include History, Geography, Latin, Music, Drama, Art and Design, Home Economics, Physical Education and Computer Science. Able mathematicians may also take Further Mathematics.
More information about the individual subject courses is available in our GCSE booklet:
