Friday, November 16, 2018
We are delighted to announce that Leweston has been shortlisted for the Creativity Award category in the TES Independent Schools Awards 2019.
The awards recognise the most outstanding individuals and institutions that the independent sector has to offer, Times Educational Supplement Editor Ann Mroz said: “Independent education in this country is truly world class. It’s one of our great success stories. And those shortlisted for the Tes Independent School Awards are the crème de la crème. We received a record number of entries this year and the standard is the highest yet, so to be shortlisted is an extraordinary achievement for any school.”
The award is for independent schools that put creativity at the heart of their work and makes children think differently, beyond the structures of the conventional curriculum. Leweston's submission highlighted the role of performing arts in the Prep and Senior curriculum drawing particular attention to the work of the KS3 showcase last year when the pupils chose to adapt the challenging story of Daniel Spargo-Mabbs. Year 9 worked together over a nine month period to adapt the original increasing the cast from the original 16 to 42 by doubling parts, using costume changes and introducing aspects of physical theatre. The topic was also woven into the wider curriculum. Dan’s mother Fiona was invited to visit the School to talk to the pupils about Dan and the work of the Foundation as part of the School’s PHSE programme. Fundraising activities were held as part of the Charities programme all of which were devised and led by the pupils themselves. These included a sponsored electronics-free week, cake sales and a raffle and collection during the three performances of the showcase.
Huge congratulations must go to all of the staff and pupils who were involved.
The winners will be revealed at a gala awards evening at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London on Friday 1 February 2019.
