Leweston students showcase their talents at TEDxSherborne
Friday, May 24, 2019
Not only did TEDxSherborne provide a unique chance to explore dual challenges and to discuss how Sherborne can be 'Fit for the Future' by bringing an invited audience together from across our community to share and discuss ideas, but it also delivered opportunities for local students to showcase a variety of talents.
Our Year 10 student, Stella, was selected as one of the final 13 speakers to talk at the inaugural event in May. Stella has travelled extensively with her family, which has given her a love of meeting people, a broad view of the world and a passion for informing and inspiring others. Her talk suggested that the community has a vital role to play in education. Stella was the youngest speaker at the event and captivated her audience with a confident and inspirational talk.
You can watch Stella's talk here:
Leweston students also took part in a fantastic drama performance for the event's interlude, ‘It’s not Instagram’s fault’ with students from The Gryphon, Sherborne Girls and Sherborne School. The piece explored the impacts of social media.
Leweston Prep and Senior Art and Design students also played a part in the event which saw them collaborate to create this fantastic whale for the TEDxSherborne Art Exhibition. Household plastics were collected over a week by pupils. This concept is a visual display of the amount of plastics we use in everyday items over the course of one week.
Year 9 dedicated their time to building the whale structure and their aim was to have the sculpture raised up from the floor surrounded by sea foam. Year 4 and 5 then created the wave like piece from plastics to accompany the whale.
Leweston's involvement didn't stop there. Our students were invited to submit photographs for the #WeAreSherborneProject. The brief was to show Sherborne from their perspective and express what it means to live and study here. Four photographs were selected and the students had a fantastic time seeing their artwork at the exhibition in town.
We are very proud of all our students and were delighted to be a part of the first TEDxSherborne event.
