Leweston School celebrate best A* Performance for three years

Thursday, August 15, 2019

Pupils at Leweston School, Sherborne, have once again produced an excellent set of A Level results with 17% of all entries achieving the highest A* grade, the best performance at this level since 2016. The School’s Dorset based pupils achieved a 77% pass rate at grade A* to B.

Three students gained A* or A grades in four subjects including Deputy Head Girl Emma S from Weymouth. Emma achieved four A*s in German, Maths, Further Maths and History. For the past two years Emma has also been leading the School’s Eco-Committee and was instrumental in Leweston achieving the Eco-Schools Silver Award this year. Through her work on the Committee Emma has organised fundraising, debates and specific initiatives such as ‘Switch Off Fortnight’.

Mrs Kate Reynolds, Head of Leweston, commented:

“Emma is a fantastic representative for Leweston’s Sixth Form. She has not only worked hard to achieve an outstanding set of A Levels but she has also made a real difference to the School’s wider community through her role on the prefect team and in spearheading our drive to reduce our impact on the planet”.

Once again, the largest number of entries were in the highly academic subjects of Psychology, History, Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths. Maths and Further Maths saw over 50% of exams gain A* to A grades and 8 departments including English, Religious Studies, German and Music saw all their entries achieve A* to B grades.

These results have enabled Leweston’s leavers to receive places on a wide range of courses including Physics and Astrophysics at Manchester, Sociology at Newcastle, Philosophy and Ethics at King’s College London and Zoology at Reading.

Mrs Reynolds went on to say:

“Every year the results and percentages only tell part of the story that makes Leweston so proud of all that its students achieve. The grades speak for themselves but behind each set of statistics is a pupil who has achieved so much more, both inside the classroom and beyond. The successes of each and every pupil are celebrated here and well-deserved congratulations go to all our A level students and to their teachers and other staff who have been influential in ensuring another year of exceptional outcomes.”
