Music plays a significant role in the life of Leweston Prep. The Prep's Chapel Choir, drawn from Years Five and Six, leads the weekly whole-school Mass and prepares for special performances throughout the year. From the Transition class onwards, pupils have weekly lessons with the Head of Music and from Year 2, they have access to individual music lessons with specialist teachers. Many pupils learn at least one instrument from the extensive range available and, as the campus is registered as an official ABRSM centre, examinations are taken within the school day. Pupils who learn orchestral instruments have the opportunity to join together with members of the Senior School through our training orchestra in order to develop their reading skills and technique in preparation for audition into the Joint Schools' Orchestras. In addition, the children enjoy ensemble playing as part of the Samba Band, String Orchestra and Wind Ensemble and performing solos in our many concerts .
Opportunities to star on stage at Leweston Prep start in the Nursery and continue right through the school. All Pre-Prep pupils have a part in the annual Nativity and older pupils perform in each Summer Term production. Performing Arts is taught as part of the curriculum from Year 2 and includes the development of stage and performance skills, improvisation, vocal technique, movement, mime and dance. Year on year, the development in confidence, self-discipline, empathy and teamwork in all pupils proves that Performing Arts education “reaches parts that other curriculum subjects do not reach.”
LAMDA examinations are also available either individually or in small groups.
