Leweston makes a significant contribution to the Pentathlon GB Pathway and is one of the cornerstones of the GB Squad developing athletes of all abilities from the School and local community in all aspects of Modern Pentathlon. In September 2016 Leweston was awarded Pentathlon Academy status by Pentathlon GB, making it one of only nine such academies in the country.

What is a Pentathlon Academy?

Pentathlon Academies are the foundations of the Performance Pathway for Pentathlon GB. Each Academy is led by an Academy Coach who works with the regional committee and National Development Staff to develop the best young pentathletes in their region so they can join the GB World Class Programme and continue onto senior success.

Academies provide coaching, training camps, competition support and more. They provide guidance to Pentathlon coaches, clubs, parents and athletes working closely with a range of partners to create athlete-centred, coach facilitated environments. More information about the Academy programme can be found on the Penathlon GB website

The Leweston Academy caters for athletes of all abilities and any pupil in the school can join, they just need to show an interest in multi-sports events and be willing to work towards improving their performance. Leweston’s highly experienced resident Coach, Mick Flaherty, organises and delivers dedicated training and mentoring programmes tailored to individual needs and abilities. In addition to this the School is home to a successful Pentathlon Club for young athletes from across the region.

The programme is divided into three stages:

Development: for younger athletes from Year 3 upwards and athletes that come onto the programme with little experience, or those who do not wish to be part of a full training programme and just take part in local events and competitions.

Potential: for athletes who have been following a regular training programme; have been taking part in local events regularly and have started to take part at a regional and national level. This stage is also for younger athletes who show the potential to move into the Performance Squad.

Performance: for athletes from Year 9 and above who have been on a regular training programme for at least one year. They will have been taking part in national events and are looking to move to a more challenging training programme with more regular national competition.

The Academy has athletes competing at all levels of the sport from their first event to Regional, National, European and World Championships.

The School also hosts a number of regional and national competitions on site every year.
