Leweston makes a significant contribution to the Pentathlon GB Pathway and is an official Pentathlon GB Training Hub. The school develops athletes of all abilities in the five disciplines of Modern Pentathlon (fencing, shooting, running, swimming and riding) either together or in combination. In addition to the full Pentathlon pupils can compete in a range of multi-discipline events including Biathlon, Biathle, Triathle, Tetrathlon, Triathlon and Laser-Run.

The Pentathlon programme at Leweston is open to athletes of all abilities and any pupil in the school can join in. Leweston’s highly experienced Head of Pentathlon, Mick Flaherty, leads a team of specialist coaches many of whom are involved with the National squad. The team deliver a weekly onsite training programme as well as mentoring, tailored to individual needs and abilities. In addition to this the school is home to a successful Pentathlon Club for young athletes from across the region.

The Pentathlon programme is divided into three stages:

Development: for athletes who come onto the programme with little experience or those who do not wish to be part of a full training programme and just take part in local events and competitions.

Potential: for athletes who have been following a regular training programme; have been taking part in local events regularly and have started to take part at a regional and national level.

Performance: for older athletes who have been on a regular training programme for at least a year. They will have been taking part in national events and are looking to move to a more challenging training programme with more regular national competition.

The school has athletes competing at all levels of the sport from their first event to Regional, National, European and World Championships.

It is equally possible for pupils not looking to compete to access shooting, fencing, riding, running and swimming through the activities programme.

TRAINING CAMPS AND EVENTS

Thanks to Leweston’s unique combination of extensive grounds and open access pool the school hosts a number of regional and national competitions throughout the year. It also runs residential Easter and Summer training camps as well as individual training days. The camps are aimed at 9 to 18 year olds who wish to develop their skills in Biathle, Pentathlon and Triathlon. Athletes enjoy a programme of daily running and swimming activities as well as the opportunity to try fencing, shooting, and biking.
