The Leweston Learner

The Leweston Learner underpins everything we do from Nursery through to Sixth Form. It provides a shared language for learning and a philosophy that helps pupils develop essential qualities for life, not just for academic success. By embracing these characteristics, pupils learn that they can control and improve these skills, creating a foundation for lifelong growth.

We embed the Leweston Learner in every lesson, every subject, and every stage of school life. Pupils are encouraged to reflect on their progress, celebrate achievements, and strive for continuous improvement. This mindset not only improves performance but also prepares pupils for the demands of higher education, the workplace, and the wider world.

Prep School: Building the Foundations

In the Prep School, pupils are introduced to the Leweston Learner characteristics early on. These qualities are woven into lessons and reinforced through:

  • Reflection after every lesson – children consider how they used the Learner skills.
  • Positive recognition – postcards are sent home when pupils demonstrate progress in a characteristic.
  • Rewards and motivation – pupils collect Learner stickers in their workbooks and earn bronze, silver, and gold star badges for reaching milestones (10, 20, and 30 stickers).

From Prep 5, pupils begin working towards the Leweston Learner Diploma, tracking their development across skill areas. They collect evidence of progress, building a portfolio that continues into Senior School.

Senior School: Tracking and Celebrating Growth

In Years 7 and 8, the Leweston Learner Diploma becomes a central focus. Pupils:

  • Continue collecting evidence of their skills.
  • Submit a final portfolio at the end of Year 8 to the Deputy Head.
  • Receive their Diploma at Bronze, Silver, or Gold standard, based on the quality of work and progress shown.

Learning observations and reports highlight the development of these skills for all ages, and pupils are rewarded for qualities such as perseverance, risk-taking, and seeking challenge, not just for test results. This approach encourages resilience and adaptability, preparing pupils for the demands of modern education and beyond.

Sixth Form: Preparing for the Future

In Sixth Form, the Leweston Learner philosophy continues to shape students’ academic and personal growth. As modern employers increasingly value transferable and soft skills, our programme develops:

  • Complex problem-solving
  • Critical thinking
  • Decision-making
  • Adaptability
  • Negotiation
  • Cognitive flexibility

Students receive feedback that focuses on these attributes, helping them understand how these qualities impact learning and behaviour. Regular reflection creates a cycle of continuous improvement, ensuring that Leweston Learners leave school ready to thrive in higher education and the workplace.
