- Joining Sixth Form
Choosing where to do your A Levels matters more than most decisions made at sixteen, and it is worth taking the time to get it right. The right Sixth Form is not necessarily the biggest, or the one with the best average results, or the one your friends are going to. It is the one where you will actually thrive, where the teaching suits the way you work, where you are known as an individual rather than a candidate, and where the next two years feel purposeful rather than just pressured.
If any of that sounds like what you are looking for, it is worth a visit.

Who joins the Sixth Form here
Leweston Sixth Form students come from schools across the South West, the wider UK and overseas, from independent schools and state schools. Some have been at Leweston since Prep; others arrive having heard about the Sixth Form from someone who knew it. What they tend to have in common is that they want to be taught properly and treated like adults, without the social pressure that makes some larger Sixth Forms exhausting.
Entry requirements
The standard offer is based on predicted and confirmed GCSE grades, a school report and a conversation with the Headmaster. Most applicants are expected to have:
- Six GCSEs at grade 5 or above
- Grade 7 or above in subjects to be studied at A Level
- Grade 5 or above in English Language and Mathematics
If your situation does not fit neatly into those criteria, if your school calculates grades differently, if there are circumstances that affected your GCSEs, or if you want to study a subject you have not taken before, contact us and we will have a direct conversation about it. The requirements are a guide, and the Headmaster makes all offers individually.
What the process involves
A visit first, ideally a personalised one built around the subjects you are interested in rather than a standard tour. Then registration. Then a taster day, which is a full day joining lessons in your intended subjects with the teachers who would be teaching you. The interview with the Headmaster usually happens on the same day. If everyone is satisfied afterwards, a conditional offer follows subject to GCSE results.
Taster Days
All prospective Sixth Form students are invited to spend a day in the Sixth Form before a place is confirmed. Sixth Form tasters are tailored to the individual, they are built around the subjects you intend to study, not a generic tour of the school.
What the day involves
- Lessons in the A Level or BTEC subjects you are considering, with the teachers who would be teaching you
- Time with current Sixth Form students to get an honest picture of what the work and the community are actually like
- A meeting with the Head of Sixth Form
- Lunch with current students
The taster day is usually combined with the interview with the Headmaster. The admissions team will arrange both together when you book. The whole day gives both you and us what we need to make a good decision.
Boarding tasters
If you are considering boarding in the Sixth Form, you are welcome to add an overnight stay to your taster day. Sixth Form boarders live in a dedicated part of the boarding house with considerably more independence than younger pupils, and an overnight stay gives you a realistic sense of what that involves. Please mention it when you contact the admissions team.
Joining from Other Schools
Every year students join us from other schools, both maintained and independent, and settle quickly. The academic transition is well supported and the admissions process is the same regardless of background. If you have questions about what the move involves practically, how the teaching differs, what the workload is like, whether the social environment will suit you, we are happy to talk it through before you commit to anything.
Frequently Asked Questions
I am not sure which subjects to choose. Can you help?
Yes. This is one of the most useful things a Sixth Form visit is for, talking through combinations, understanding what each course actually involves at A Level and working out what makes sense given what you want to do afterwards. Come and have that conversation before you register rather than after. Finding the Right Course →
What if my GCSE results are not what was predicted?
The Headmaster will speak to you directly. We try to make decisions that are right for the individual rather than applying a threshold mechanically. If there are circumstances that affected your results, tell us, it will be taken into account.
Is boarding available?
Yes. Sixth Form boarders live in a dedicated part of the boarding house with considerably more independence than younger pupils. Many students who have been day pupils lower in the school choose to board in the Sixth Form, and a number of external students join specifically for that combination of independence and support. You can add an overnight stay to your taster day to see what it is actually like.
What support is there for university applications?
UCAS preparation begins in Year 12 and is managed by the Head of Sixth Form alongside subject teachers. Students applying to Oxford, Cambridge or universities in the United States receive additional targeted support from staff with experience of those processes.
How much do fees cost?
Current fee information is set out on our fees pages, updated each academic year. Fees vary depending on year group and whether you are a day pupil or boarder. See current fees →
