Broad and Flexible Curriculum

Leweston delivers a broad and flexible curriculum that ensures balanced, appropriate, and engaging opportunities for every pupil. Lessons are designed to be both challenging and inspiring, encouraging intellectual curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.

In Year 9, pupils study English, Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, History, Geography, Religious Studies, Computer Science, French, Spanish, Art and Design, Latin, Music, Home Economics, Drama, PE, and PSHRE.

  • 60-minute lessons allow for deeper exploration and meaningful discussion.
  • A two-week timetable cycle provides flexibility and variety in subject choice.
  • Each subject is led by experienced teachers under the guidance of dedicated Heads of Department, all focused on helping pupils achieve their personal best.

For the first time, pupils can tailor part of their learning with choices in Modern Foreign Languages, Latin, and Classical Civilisations. Year 9 also sets the foundations for GCSEs, introducing key topics and important study skills.

We encourage pupils to work hard and grow in independence—while also making sure they feel happy, supported, and able to seize every opportunity, both in and out of the classroom.

Life in Year 9

Many students join Leweston from other schools in Year 9, so every pupil receives strong support from the very first day. Our induction programme includes a buddy system, pastoral check-ins, and personalised academic guidance to help everyone settle in with confidence.

Teaching groups are reshaped in Year 9, and a new Head of Year leads the group—making sure that every pupil, whether new or returning, has a fresh start. The Head of Year stays with the cohort right through to GCSEs, providing consistent support.

With our tutor system, wellbeing programme, and dedicated Head of Year, every child is supported and encouraged. Friendships form quickly, and help is always close by.

Year 9 is also the perfect time to try new things. Pupils can take part in drama, music, equestrian, pentathlon, and more, with a wide range of co-curricular activities to help them discover new interests. Many also begin to explore our flexible boarding options, including B&B, flexi, and weekly boarding.
