- The Great Outdoors
We are incredibly fortunate to be based in beautiful rural Dorset, surrounded by fields, woodland and open skies. Every day, our children spend time outside, exploring nature, building confidence, and enjoying the freedom to run, play and discover. From babies in pushchairs to our oldest nursery children racing across the lawns, outdoor learning is at the heart of life at Leweston Nursery.
Our Grounds
Leweston sits within 50 acres of beautiful parkland, and our nursery children make the most of this space every day. All age groups enjoy at least one daily nature walk. Babies go out in pushchairs, while older children explore the pond, follow the paths up to the Belvedere, and notice the changing seasons around them.
Our Pre‑School pupils often join Pre‑Prep for afternoon walks, helping them feel part of the wider school community and easing the transition into Reception for those who stay with us. It also helps to build friendships across year groups.
The Nursery Garden
Our large, dedicated nursery garden is fully enclosed and secure, with free‑flow access so children can move between indoors and outdoors throughout the day. The space offers:
- A covered, hard‑surfaced area for structured activities and all‑weather play
- Mixed surfaces, including paths for bikes and scooters and wide grassed areas for running and games
- A shaded, tree‑covered woodland corner with digging pits, playhouses, a “dinosaur world”, swings and play kitchens
- Age‑appropriate climbing equipment, with smaller units for younger children and a larger wooden frame for those over three
- Sand and water play that is always available, with children encouraged to choose and set up their own outdoor resources
Children feel a wonderful sense of freedom, while remaining safely within the nursery’s secure garden.
Gardening
We believe it is important for young children to develop a genuine sense of ownership over their environment. In our nursery garden they help to care for dedicated gardening areas, including a herb bed and a growing vegetable patch, and in the summer months they use the wider school greenhouse to grow tomatoes, sunflowers and other plants. They experience the full journey from seed to plate, often taking what they have grown to the kitchen to cook and taste. These simple, hands‑on experiences nurture patience, responsibility and real pride in their achievements.
Forest School
Beyond the garden, we are lucky to have our own designated Forest School area: a four‑acre woodland known as “The Enchanted Wood”, complete with a fire circle and parachute shelter.
Led by our fully qualified Forest School leader, weekly sessions give Pre‑School children the chance to:
- Explore and engage with a real woodland environment in all seasons
- Work together, solve problems and take manageable risks in a safe, well‑supervised setting
- Build resilience, independence and a lifelong connection with nature
Following the Scandinavian Forest School ethos, we go outside in all weathers. Every child has waterproofs, wellies and a warm coat as part of their kit. Rain means puddle‑splashing; cold days call for hats, scarves and gloves—not staying indoors.
The Equestrian Centre
Our equestrian centre offers another exciting experience for our youngest pupils. Regular visits to the stables allow even our babies to watch the horses being fed and cared for, to help replenish hay and observe the daily routines of the yard, and to see riding lessons taking place on our regular walks around the grounds. Early riding opportunities are available for nursery children, adding yet another dimension to their outdoor education.
