Catholic Social Teaching

One of the places where CST can be lived out is in the school setting. Leweston is not only a place of academic excellence, but also a community of faith and service that foster the integral development of students. Leweston has a mission to educate the whole person: mind, body, spirit, and heart. In doing so, we prepare students to become responsible citizens and disciples of Christ who can contribute to the common good of society.

How is CST integrated into the Catholic life of the school?

    • We teach CST as part of the curriculum, especially in Religious Studies & PSHRE, however all subjects include the key principles in their schemes of work. We use various resources and methods to help students understand and apply CST to their own lives and contexts, with particular reference to Cafod.
    • We promote a culture of respect, dialogue, and solidarity among students, staff, parents, and other stakeholders. We encourage diversity and inclusion, and address any forms of discrimination or bullying. We celebrate the achievements and contributions of different groups and individuals in the Leweston school community.
    • We provide opportunities for students to engage in social action and service learning. We connect them with local and global issues and organizations that align with CST values. We help them reflect on their experiences and how they can make a positive difference in the world.
    • We nurture a spirituality of stewardship and care for creation. We teach students about the environmental challenges facing our planet and how they can respond with ecological awareness and responsibility. We implement practices that reduce waste, conserve energy, and protect natural resources in the school.
    • We foster a sense of vocation and discernment among students. We help them discover their gifts and talents, and how they can use them for God's glory and the service of others. We support them in their academic, personal, and spiritual growth, and guide them in their choices for their future.

Catholic Social Teaching is not only a set of teachings, but also a way of living out our faith in action. By integrating CST into the Catholic life of the school, we can help our students become more aware, compassionate, and committed to building God's kingdom on earth.

    Human Dignity

We believe that every person is created in God’s image and that all human life is sacred. We believe in the dignity of each person.

“Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.” Jeremiah 1:5

    Family & Community

We believe that working together and helping each other, even those we don't know , strengths our home, our society and our world.

"Let the Church always be a place of mercy and hope, where everyone is welcomed, loved and forgiven." Pope Francis

    Solidarity & Common Good

We believe we are part of one human family and have a responsibility to help each person achieve their full potential.

We believe in working towards the common good and looking beyond our own personal interests.

“In truth I tell you, in so far as you did this to one of the least of these of mine, you did it to me.” Matthew 25:40

    Rights and Responsibilities

We believe every person has a fundamental right to life and a right to those things required for human decency. We all have duties and responsibilities—to one another, to our families, and to the larger society to protect these rights.

“Speak out, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy." Proverbs 31:9

    Option for the Poor

We believe in prioritising the women, men and children most vulnerable to extreme poverty and injustice.

“The spirit of the Lord is on me, for he has anointed me to bring the good news to the afflicted. He has sent me… to let the oppressed go free.” Luke 4:18

    The Dignity of Work

We believe in every person’s right to participate in the decisions that affect their own lives.

“A small number of very rich men have been able to lay upon the teeming masses of the labouring poor a yoke little better than that of slavery itself.” Rerum Novarum, 1891, #3

    Stewardship

We believe that care for our common home is vital for the common good of all people. We believe a true ecological approach is a social approach. We are to be protectors of creation and of one another.

"Care for nature so that it cares for us."  Pope Francis
